6 Quiet Jobs For Loners

Alone Time

You don’t have to deny it…if you like to spend time on your own then there is no need to worry about it.  There are jobs available for everyone out there, and there are even jobs out there for people that just like to be on their own and not chat the day away.

If socialising just isn’t your thing then you need not worry - the following list shows a few of the jobs your can take up where you don’t have to worry about impressing people, chatting or even talking with anyone else;

Mechanic

Mechanics spend most of their time inside the engines of cars - if they didn’t then they wouldn’t be doing a very good job.  Spending most of your day either in a car or under it doesn’t leave much time for chit chat - if you like to fix things then this is the job for you…you can get things fixed without having to chat it up…

Cost Estimator

Cost estimators tend to spend their time alone because they are too busy trying to go through paperwork like blueprints and proposals to decide how much projects will cost from the beginning to the end.  Cost estimators need to be on their own so they can concentrate - they don’t have the time or the need to engage in any conversation!

Librarian

If you have ever been told to “shhhh” in a library then you will understand how this job would suit someone who wants to keep quiet!  You can spend your days organising books that don’t talk back and you will very sparsely asked for advice or help because everything is automated these days.

Survey Researcher

A survey researcher goes about finding out what people think - they don’t interview people, instead they create surveys over the Internet and create questionnaires that can be mailed for example.  This cuts down any conversation time to nothing!  Survey researchers spend their time alone because they don’t actually need to be with anyone else when they are creating and preparing the questionnaires.

Translator

If you like being quiet then you don’t want to do any talking translating - you want to translate content from one language into another, usually from a newspaper or other text format.  You need to spend your time reading, researching, etc…  You can even have the chance to work from home as do nearly a quarter of translators around the globe.

Undertaker

A quieter job couldn’t exist - you are dealing with the departed, and they don’t talk.  You rarely have to deal with families for long and then you’re back with the dead people that don’t want to talk much either.  Be alone in the silence whenever you want to be.

Social Networking - A New Employable Skill

If you spend your days floating around Facebook when you should be looking for a job, or getting some fresh air, or even living your life, then you probably get a mouthful from your friends, partner or parents.

However, no you have a come-back - Facebook is an employable skill!!

Just because you spend your hours in a social networking online world doesn’t mean that you are wasting your time - today employers are actually interested in social network addicts and the skills that they have gained from the practice.

Read on to discover what skills you have gained from 10 hours a day on Facebook;

Recruiter

You have probably been on something like Facebook or MySpace for years now, since the early days when MySpace actually launched musical talent and Facebook was simple and good because of it.

Social networking is said to now be a great place for recruiting - the conversations and information online is considered to be as real as it gets despite the hassle social networking sites receive from the press.

Strategist

Companies are on the look out for social media strategists that are tasked with providing an insight into the social media of the company.  Social networking users got such skills by spending their time sifting through the many pages and getting to know what impresses in today’s social media markets.

A social media strategist is supposed to grow band awareness, create buzz for a specific package, increase traffic and provide information whenever possible - if you feel you got these skills from your many years on the social networking scene then go ahead and apply for the position.

Enterprise Architect

When a company decides to totally revamp their content strategy where are they going to turn?  Perhaps they should turn to the social networking lovers out there who have spent their time networking, developing ideas, discussing political views and working through multiple platforms.  It may not sound like a day on Facebook or MySpace, but it is!

Director of Social Media

An online presence can’t be taken for granted any more, but the more modern companies out there are turning to even more modern ways of staying present online.

As a director of social media you will have to look after company blogging, viral marketing, podcasting and so on - you will be at the forefront of the company’s modern Internet direction.

To fit into a position such as this you should be able to understand new technologies and especially be familiar with blogs.  Other online tools, such as RSS feeds, Twitter and Facebook will also be extremely useful.  However, to keep the position you should be able to understand the difference between chilling on Facebook and working on it…

Re-fill your wallet the easy way…

If you’re feeling the pinch through this recession that we’re fighting through, and you’re worried that your job isn’t going to last very long, you might want to start thinking about how you can earn the extra pennies…

Don’t’ stress out about the recession any longer - you don’t have to worry about money any more…read on to find out the different ways you can fill your wallet again and enjoy the summer sun the way you were supposed to;

Freelancing

There are very few jobs that can’t use freelancers today - and freelancing is very attractive for employers as they don’t have to factor in a heavy monthly salary into their records.  You can skip from job to job in your own time and if you want to spend a week by the beach then that’s up to you…the bad side is there is always the possibility there won’t be any work available, but the risk is part of the game…

Boot Sales

I’m not suggesting you fill your boot with your books, drive down to the local car boot sale and hope for the best - a better option is to sell your books online.  Whether they’re educational, fictional or sci-fi they’ll pull in the pennies and you’ll also declutter your house which is never a bad thing…

Focus Groups

There isn’t enough said about focus groups - imagine if you could get paid to give your opinion…actually, you can!  That’s right, it’s possibly the easiest money you’ll ever make and it’s pretty well paid in most occasions.  You can earn anywhere between £5 and £100 or more depending on the type of group you decide to do.

eBay

You might have thought you’d stay away from online auctioning in the past, but now the times are tight and you’ve got a load of stuff in your basement that could bring you a pretty penny.  Get on eBay and sell it on.  It’s easy to set up an account and all you’ll need to do is take a few pictures and fill out a bit about the item and away you go.  Some people even go to car boot sales looking for bargains and then sell them on for much more online.

Secret Shopper

If you like shopping and you like to pick at the service then you should try and get a job as a secret shopper - all you need to do is go to a shop and discover how the shop works from the customer’s point of view.  Easy!  Start earning money while you shop, it doesn’t get better than that…

Student Advice: Filling Out Job Application Forms

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Students need jobs too you know – but not all students know what to do when it comes to application forms.  An application form is your chance to give a great first impression and if you get the application form wrong then you can forget waiting for a phone call…

Don’t make mistakes – There’s nothing worse than reading through an application form filled with silly mistakes.  The way you fill out the application form reflects you and can be the deciding factor as to whether you get the interview or not.

Check through the application form, whether online or on paper, for spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes and make sure that the capitals and full stops are all in the right place.

If it’s a paper application then fill it out in very light pencil first or on a different piece of paper so you know exactly what you’re going to write.

Never leave gaps – Fill the application form out in full and no matter what the excuse is never leave a gap.  Even if you come across a section that seems to be completely irrelevant to you simply place a n/a there showing that you have acknowledged the section but have deemed it “not applicable”.

If you leave a section blank then it could seem that you have been lazy or have simply missed a bit of the application – don’t let anyone think you’re lazy!

Detail is key – An application form isn’t the time to be mysterious so take time to provide as much detail as possible.  Don’t go on and on but make sure that everything has been said.

If there is a set space for you to respond to a written question then fill it up with information – don’t leave any space empty because it makes you look like you have nothing to say…

Where are you? – If you might be in another location other than your main address through the application process then provide that address as well as your main address.

Provide as much relevant information as possible about the addresses as well, such as dates and telephone numbers so you can be reached no matter where you are.  Don’t forget to supply your email address as well because you should always be able to be reached my email no matter where you are.

Don’t leave gaps in your timeline – Time gaps on your application form give the impression that you’re trying to hide something.  Make sure every year of your life is covered on your application form and be honest about it.

Most recent first – When supplying information about previous experiences you should always start with the most recent experience first, unless of coursed you are told to do otherwise.

The reason you should add your most recent experience first is because potential employers are interested in what you have done recently, not that you did a paper round when you were 8.

What about you?
