Unless you have been asleep for the last 2 months it would be impossible not to notice that the Olympic Games are turning into a complete nightmare with activists chasing the Torch around the world, in order to highlight the troubles in Tibet. While Beijing 2008 is still set to go ahead, there are real concerns that the current situation will cause long term harm to the Olympic movement. So what is actually going on?
The Chinese authorities have reacted with great violence to events in Tibet where the locals have been demonstrating in order to try and over throw the rule of the Chinese authorities. This has dragged the Dalai Lama into the equation and everything is starting to get very aggressive and very complicated, with the Chinese authorities blaming the Dalai Lama for the uprising and the Dalai Lama blaming the Chinese authorities for their over aggressive approach to the demonstrations.
While each and every government around the world have expressed their concern at events in Tibet, not one has been brave enough to take any political or financial action. These are the very same people who were quick enough to act against the Iraqi government, twice, as well as Afghanistan, but then again perhaps China might put up more of a fight!
If the likes of the UK and the US are as dismayed with the Chinese actions as they say, why are they still sending teams to the Olympics, why did they all agree to China hosting the games in 2008 in the first place? It is not as if this is the first time that China has been seen to push human rights laws to the very limit. The whole situation is on the verge of turning into a nightmare scenario where we will surely see at least one country drop out, and many more follow. While the Games must go on, this year will test the Olympic spirit to the very limit!
